Intro

Every detailing business starts somewhere.

For me, it started knocking on doors in Grand Rapids, Michigan, trying to convince people to trust a young detailer who was obsessed with making cars look better than when they left the factory.

Eight years ago, Lava GR Auto Detailing began with nothing more than a few tools, a lot of determination, and a belief that if I worked hard enough, I could build something real.

But what most people don’t see when they look at a successful detailing business is the journey it takes to get there.

The mistakes.
The lessons.
The systems that take years to figure out.

That’s exactly why DirtLab exists.

Why DirtLab Exists

Over the last eight years building my detailing company in Grand Rapids, I’ve learned something important about this industry:

Most detailers are figuring everything out alone.

They’re experimenting with tools, chemicals, pricing models, marketing strategies, and business systems — often through pure trial and error.

That’s how I learned.

And while trial and error teaches powerful lessons, it also comes at a cost.

Over the years I’ve made millions of dollars worth of mistakes in lost time, failed systems, wrong decisions, and opportunities that could have been handled differently if I had the right guidance earlier.

Some of those lessons were business mistakes.

Some were personal.

When you push yourself to build something from nothing, it’s easy to lose balance.

You lose sleep.
You lose relationships.
Sometimes you even lose yourself chasing the next solution.

The Problem With the Detailing Industry

The detailing industry is full of talented people.

But many detailers struggle with the same challenges:

• figuring out pricing
• finding consistent customers
• building efficient workflows
• learning advanced detailing techniques
• growing a business without burning out

Most of the information available online only shows the finished results.

The glossy cars.
The perfect ceramic coatings.
The highlight reels.

What’s missing are the real systems behind the scenes.

That’s where DirtLab comes in.

What DirtLab Is

DirtLab is a place where detailers can learn the systems behind building a successful detailing business.

Not just detailing techniques.

But the full ecosystem required to grow:

• marketing systems
• workflow automation
• pricing strategies
• customer communication
• AI tools
• shop operations
• advanced detailing techniques

It’s a place where the lessons that took years to figure out can be shared with other detailers who are trying to build something of their own.

The DirtLab Playbook

This blog — The DirtLab Playbook — is where those lessons will be documented.

Think of it as the Diary of a Detailer.

Here you’ll find:

• real stories from inside the detailing industry
• lessons learned while building Lava GR Auto Detailing
• workflows and systems that make detailing businesses scalable
• advice for aspiring detailers and shop owners
• mistakes that can help others avoid the same struggles

This isn’t theory.

It’s real experience from the shop floor.

Who DirtLab Is For

DirtLab is for anyone who wants to grow in the detailing industry.

Whether you’re:

• just starting your first detailing business
• running a mobile operation
• building a full detailing shop
• looking to scale your company

The goal is the same.

To help detailers build better skills, better systems, and better businesses.

Why I’m Doing This

When I started my detailing company in Grand Rapids, I didn’t have a roadmap.

I learned everything the hard way.

And while those lessons built experience, they also came with sacrifices that could have been avoided with the right knowledge.

DirtLab exists so the next generation of detailers doesn’t have to learn everything the same way.

The goal is simple:

To share the systems, strategies, and lessons that can help detailers grow faster while building businesses they’re proud of.

The Journey Starts Here

This is the first entry in the Diary of a Detailer.

And it’s only the beginning.

In the coming entries we’ll explore:

• the mistakes that cost the most time
• the systems that changed the business
• the tools that actually matter
• the strategies that help detailers grow

Because every detailer has a story.

And this is where those stories start getting written down.

Welcome to DirtLab.
