Detailing 101

When people see a successful detailing shop, they usually only see the finished result — the polished cars, the busy schedule, and the steady flow of customers.

What they don’t see is the long road it took to get there.

When I started Lava GR Auto Detailing in Grand Rapids, Michigan, I didn’t have a blueprint. I knocked on doors, made mistakes, learned things the hard way, and slowly built systems that actually worked.

Looking back, there are a few mistakes that almost every new detailer makes — including me.

1. Focusing Only On The Craft, Not The Business

Most detailers love the work itself. The polishing, the coatings, the transformation of a vehicle.

But detailing isn’t just a skill — it’s a business.

Pricing, scheduling, marketing, customer communication, and workflow systems matter just as much as the detailing itself. Without those systems, growth becomes chaos.

2. Underpricing Your Work

Nearly every new detailer undervalues their services.

When I first started, I thought charging less would help me get more customers. In reality, it often attracts the wrong ones and makes it harder to grow.

Your time, tools, chemicals, and expertise all have value.

3. Not Building Systems Early

One of the biggest lessons I learned is that systems create freedom.

Things like booking systems, customer communication templates, checklists, and workflows can completely change how your business runs.

That’s one of the reasons DirtLab exists — to help detailers build those systems much faster than I did.

4. Trying To Learn Everything Alone

The detailing industry is full of knowledge, but it’s scattered everywhere.

YouTube videos, Facebook groups, random advice — it’s easy to feel overwhelmed.

Having structured training and real-world guidance can shorten the learning curve dramatically.

5. Burning Yourself Out

This is something a lot of detailers don’t talk about.

When you’re building a business, it’s easy to push too hard. Long hours, constant pressure, and the drive to grow can lead to burnout.

The goal isn’t just to build a business — it’s to build one that works for you.
